1. Application In Peritoneal Dialysis
As an osmotic agent, icodextrin is mainly used in peritoneal dialysis (PD), especially continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for patients with chronic renal failure. It forms colloidal osmotic pressure through high molecular weight dextrin, prolongs the ultrafiltration time of dialysate in the peritoneal cavity, improves dehydration efficiency, and helps remove excess water and metabolic waste in the body.
2. Comparison With Traditional Glucose Dialysis Fluid
The molecular weight of icodextrin peritoneal dialysis fluid is large and not easily absorbed by the peritoneum, so it can maintain the osmotic gradient for a long time and improve the ultrafiltration effect. In contrast, traditional peritoneal dialysis fluid with glucose as the osmotic agent has a small molecular weight and is easily absorbed, making it difficult to maintain the osmotic gradient for a long time, which may lead to a decrease in ultrafiltration and changes in the peritoneal structure and function.
3. Biocompatibility And Safety
Icodextrin peritoneal dialysis fluid does not contain glucose and is suitable for diabetic patients to reduce the impact of blood sugar. Studies have shown that the use of icodextrin peritoneal dialysis fluid can reduce the risk of congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke.
In addition, icodextrin peritoneal dialysis fluid also has high biocompatibility, reducing irritation and damage to the peritoneum.
4. Indications
Icodextrin peritoneal dialysis fluid is suitable for patients with peritoneal ultrafiltration failure, high transport or high average transport, diabetes, and patients with excessive volume load and insufficient ultrafiltration.
5. Other Medical Applications
